Expanding the Scope of What Business Schools Contr

西南交通大学

“创源”大讲堂研究生学术讲座

讲座时间:7310:00

讲座地点:九里校区0号楼0411

讲座题目:Expanding the Scope of What Business Schools Contribute to Society: Applying Our Expertise to Improve Health Care

主讲人:Dana L. Alden教授

主要内容:For too long, business schools around the world have focused their research energy and expertise on two sectors of the economy – the for-profit product and the for-profit service sector.  Yet, a large part of developed and emerging markets’ economies include growing industries such as health care services that are not typically delivered by the same kinds of organizations that produce cars and manage investment portfolios.  For example, in the U.S. health care services comprised about 18% of GDP in 2017 (6.23% in China). Yet, few business school Faculty in North America or Europe focus their considerable abilities on improving the quality of health care consumer services.

For the past 20 years, Dr. Alden has pioneered ways that business schools can play a more active research and educational role in health care.  For example, under his leadership, the Shidler College of Business, launched a successful distance learning Executive MBA that combines traditional management training with specific coursework in health care service delivery.  In addition, Dr. Alden has formed research partnerships with numerous medical schools in North America and Asia. Through such collaboration, he has conducted multiple studies that are published in quality journals and read by health care providers and managers around the world.

In his talk, Dr. Alden is provides an overview of his current research designed to help health care consumers make more informed and effective medical decisions with their doctors. The first study presents recent results of Dr. Alden’s team effort to test their cultural targeting model, which was first published in Social Science & Medicine in 2014.  The results of four randomized experiments with an ethnic minority group in the United States will likely surprise many attendees. But, this is the joy of discovery that fuels real improvements in health care services. The second study also examines cultural factors in health care decision making.  Results from a 7-country study that includes China and others from Asia show that health care consumers’ attitudes toward family involvement in medical decision making are highly variable within cultures and don’t follow stereotypical assumptions.  Finally,   Dr. Alden’s third study, a cutting-edge collaborative effort involving researchers from Norway, the United States, and Singapore, tests the effectiveness of a smart phone app and associated website for patients with bipolar disorder. More than a decision aid, the product is designed to assist patients and providers with developing and maintaining a holistic approach to managing bipolar disorder.  In addition to asking patients how they have done over the past few weeks between appointments, the provider uses self-report data regularly uploaded by the patient as a basis for discussion during the consultation.  Underused in the treatment of mental challenges, this novel app/website product represents an innovation that will help revolutionize interactive medical care and shared decision making. Key to the project is successful diffusion of innovation strategies – an important area that has been neglected by business researchers in the recent past.

At the end of the presentation, participants will have a deeper appreciation of the tremendous potential for marketing science (and other functional business areas) to benefit consumers, managers, and society in new areas such as health care and environmental sustainability. Questions and active discussion are encouraged throughout the presentation.
